It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Roland Christopher Bruyere, a revered figure in the lacrosse community and a dedicated servant to his city, who left us on January 27, 2024, at the age of 52. Roland, affectionately known as Rolly, was a beacon of love, strength, and dedication in every facet of his life, from the lacrosse field to the heart of his family.
Rolly's journey began on December 23, 1971, and from a young age, it was clear that he was destined to leave an indelible mark on the world. His passion for lacrosse was more than just a hobby; it was a calling. Rolly's illustrious career in the sport saw him inducted into the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame not once, but three times, a testament to his skill, dedication, and influence in the game.
His achievements on the field included playing for Team Canada East at the XV Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, and winning the National Championship in Junior Men’s Field Lacrosse with the Manitoba Field Lacrosse Team in 1990. Rolly's contribution to the sport, especially in Manitoba and the community of Sagkeeng, was profound, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
Beyond the lacrosse field, Rolly was a hero in another arena, serving the City of Winnipeg as a firefighter. His commitment to safeguarding the community exemplified his selfless nature and his desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Rolly's work ethic and dedication were unwavering, whether in his professional endeavours or in his personal life, where he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
In honour of Roland Christopher Bruyere's remarkable contributions to lacrosse and his community, we are proud to announce the renaming of the Male Athlete of the Year Award to the Roland Bruyere Memorial Award - Male Athlete of the Year. This award will be bestowed annually to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of dedication, excellence, and athletic skill and ability that Rolly embodied. It is our hope that through this award, Rolly's legacy will continue to inspire and influence future generations, just as he has done throughout his memorable life.
